When will our president take charge of the AIDS plague?
by Marcos Rivero
President Clinton does not care that there is a plague going on. We need somebody to take charge; we don't have such a person.
This plague is intentional genocide because people who are affected are expendable. Gays, blacks, Hispanics, IV drug users, prostitutes...it's a genocide with government sanction. When will our president
ACT UP
CLEVELAND
take the time to meet with AIDS activists and perhaps learn what we already know? AIDS has become the third largest killer of men and the fourth largest for women nationwide. Congress has done nothing. The NIH has done nothing. There isn't even a director at the NIH right now. Congress appropriates money to the NIH and is an accessory to this genocide.
Why has President Clinton not made a serious gesture towards helping to end this plague? The first meeting to form a Manhattan-style project was already held in Madison, Wisconsin [see story]. Representatives from drug companies, scientists, activists and PLWAs will meet again this September at Harvard University. We demand that our president go to the meeting. The media is also remiss in their responsibility to the

public by not pressuring the president on AIDS issues. As a community we have wasted too much time with the military ban; AIDS was pushed aside. We lost that battle and we are losing the battle against AIDS.
Do not kid yourself. Tthis is no longer an epidemic as they would have you believe, nor is it a pandemic. It is now a full-blown
plague. Over 900 reported cases in Ohio alone since January. These figures do not reflect those whose family and friends list respiratory failure, lymphoma, meningitis, and leukemia in obituaries and death certificates, and those who commit suicide after learning that they are positive.
When are we all going to take responsibility for our actions and join the fight? That means HIV positive and negative people of all races, creeds, colors and sexual persuasions. If we do not, civilization as we know it will no longer exist. This will be the end of humanity. We are now close to 300,000 people dead and counting in the United States alone.
If this does not scare you, perhaps something else will: You may be the next statistic. Know how to protect yourself and your partner, and support those who are fighting for you. We call on the president, scientists, drug companies, activists, everybody. Let's talk to each other and help each other to end this plague. Our separate agendas are getting us nowhere. How many more of your friends and loved ones have to succumb to this plague before you scream "ENOUGH!"

While most houses of worship slow down during the summer months, Chevrei Tikva kept the momentum going. On the Shabbat of August 6th our guests were from ACT UP-Cleveland. When congregants heard about this event, the usual response was, "Oh them, I don't approve of what they do!" The powers-that-be at Chevrei Tikva thought this would be a good educational experience about the positive results achieved by this group.
Joe Carroccio spoke about ACT UP's campaigns that have reduced the cost of AZT for PWAs, their involvement in abortion rights since the opposite is discrimination, the needle exchange program, and their pressure on the national administration concerning cabinet nominees who will be AIDS aware. He further explained that every movement in the past has had to use civil disobedience to achieve its goals. There was a good discussion following his talk.
The evening concluded with a first at Chevrei Tikva: a commitment ceremony. Neil L. and Steve L. tied the knot (so-to-

speak) with Victor performing the ritual. It was interesting to see this life cycle event added to our history.
On August 20 the Donnelly Players presented the Women's Version of Rosh Hodesh. Rosh Hodesh is the celebration of the new moon, which in Judaism is also the new month. This happens every 28 days, which is why women are more interested in this
event.
September marks the High Holidays, beginning with the New Year (Rosh Hashana) and ending with the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). At the first holiday we pray "Who shall live and who shall not," at the end of Yom Kippur, the Book of Life is sealed for the year. Our new year is 5754!
Chevrei Tikva has a complete schedule of holiday services. There will also be dinners and lunches, where appropriate, for those who wish to break bread with extended family. The complete schedule can be found in Charlie's Calender or by calling the CT Line: 932-5551.
